Bok Choy

LI: To understand we make judgements based on stereotyping, assumptions and prejudices

Today we read the text Bok Choy for Reading. This text showed us the prejudices that existed towards the Chinese immigrants in early NZ. It also showed us that it is important to show empathy for those who are seen to be different from us. Our challenge after reading this was to write a letter to Ah Sum to thank him properly, as you didn’t have the right words when you were shivering in his hut.

This was what I wrote:

Dear Ah Sum

I am so sorry, I just… wanted to fit in. But I didn’t have the right words at that time, so I wanted to give you an apology. Also, the bok choy mother buys from you is surprisingly good. If you hadn’t sold it, I’d probably be a little bit more bored. Thank you for saving my life, Ah Sum. I truly mean it.

Sincerely, Jacob

The Thirst For Adventure

LI: To structure and write a narrative

Mrs Anderson read us the book ‘First Flight’ by June Crebbin. We talked about the narrators point of view and used a Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what the story might look like when told in the first person. I enjoyed using the Gem because it helped me create the book itself. Without the gem, I couldn’t of created it.

Digital Mural

LI: To design a mural for our community that connects to my culture

For Reading we read ‘Painting the Town’ by by Renata Hopkins. This text was about how Christchurch has painted murals all over the city to bring back happiness to the city after the 2011 earthquake destroyed 80% of the city. My mural (which was created in Google drawings) shows the freedom to fall wherever you want.

Influencers

Today I was making a DLO about influencers, and how they influence us, and also about what influencers are anyway. The font I used for the title was Archivo Black, the font I used for the information was Arvo.
